Make your own homemade newspaper pots

newspaper pots

As you probably know we shouldn’t be using peat pots due to environmental concerns, buying terra cotta pots is too expensive, what is a cheap gardener to do? Make your own homeade pots out of newspaper of course. Muddy Clogs describes how to exactly do this on her blog. My only complaint is that I didn’t think of it first.

This looks great! Sadly I didn’t know about peat, I got so excited about all the seeds that I just bought one of those mini-greenhouse kits without considering the plastic or wondering about peat. I did manage to find planters made of recycled material though (my garden will be living on my apartment balcony).

No worries, I didn’t learn until I noticed some coconut coir what much cheaper than peat moss and went online to see what people were saying. From my own experimenting I prefer it over peat moss no contest.

I prefer the square origami pots because they sit better together inside a tray as apposed to the round. I sit at night and make them while watching TV. I even got the teenagers to do some, and that is a feat unto itself! The instructions are here:< HREF="http://www.geocities.com/newspaperpots/” REL=”nofollow”>Newspaper Pots

Decided to try the other method this morning with my girls but it appears I am origamically challenged. In my defense my paper was definately different than the one on the website.

Paper egg cartons are also good, and there’s no origami involved.

I just rolled up tons of newspaper pots with Wondersoil to start my garden for next year. Great post!

Try this – I just did a pictorial to (hopefully) make it much easier for anyone to do! People always get stuck somewhere and it’s impossible to be able to tell them where they’re going wrong through emails, so this should help.
