Mulch your garden with human hair

Need a renewable mulching source that is completely renewable?  Check your shower drain.

After spending 18 years as a hair stylist, Phil McCrory got an idea. He developed “SmartGrow” – mats woven from human hair. The product is becoming a popular organic alternative to chemical herbicides

If you don’t have the time to collect and weave your own human hair mats you can always purchase one from SmartGrow from under $4.00 to over $15.00 depending on the size you need.

Okay what’s weird about this product, is the word ‘hair’ is stated ONE TIME on the front page. I didn’t see any reference to hair, human or otherwise, in text or video.Does anyone else think this idea is grody to the max? 😉

Sorry, this one really grosses me out. I know some people compost their family’s hair, and that’s on the icky side for me too, but someone else’s hair, I just couldn’t do it. Sorry!

  3. Rick Says:

Sorry but I can find other mulches. I don’t want to encourage anything capable of breaking down human tissue in my garden.

I don’t like hair in my food.

rody to the max? No.I have composted hair in the ecompost bin for some time- canine, feline and human Hair is not nessecarily a renewable product though- just a look at my head would show you that!

hair is great for the soil, full of minerals. I’ve used it for years. what’s gross about hair?

  7. The Cheap Vegetable Gardener Says:

Don, I noticed that as well. Almost like they are hiding that little fact :)Karen, I would have to agree. Not sure what makes our families hair any less icky, it just does.Robj98168, yeah I seem to be producing a little less each year as well.

That makes for a great addition to compost. WE always empty the vaccuum cleaner into the compost because it is always full of dog hair!

  9. Joi Says:

Why would this be more icky than poop? Really.

cool hair cause i want to take the time to find hair and stick it in my “garden” when i could just be useing plain old dirt. Not that it matters with my brown thumbHEE HEE

Hmm, I have a hair salon just down the street. Hadn’t thought of asking for floor sweepings. I agree with Joi — compared to poop, hair is pretty tame. The link showed a study comparing growth rates of peace lilies with and without mat but I’m wondering about the reference to ‘alternative to herbicide.’ Is the mat meant to be used as mulch or as a planting medium?

Nice post. I learn something totally new and
challenging on sites I stumbleupon everyday. It will always be helpful to read content
from other authors and practice a little something from other websites.
