Soil pH Fall Brassicas: Fix It Now for Better Crops

Getting soil pH right for fall brassicas is something most gardeners overlook, and I was no exception. Last spring I pulled my broccoli heads and they were the size of golf balls. Not in a cute, miniature way. In a something-is-wrong, why-did-I-bother way. Turns out my soil was running acidic, which is basically the default setting in the Pacific Northwest, and my brassicas were quietly starving even though I’d fertilized them like a responsible adult.

The fix cost me a few dollars and about twenty minutes of work. But I had to do it in fall, not spring. Which is the part most people miss.

Why Brassicas and Beets Are Picky About pH

Broccoli, cabbage, kale, Brussels sprouts, beets. They all want soil sitting somewhere between 6.0 and 7.0, with the sweet spot closer to 6.5. Below that, nutrients like calcium and magnesium lock up in the soil and the plants can’t reach them even if they’re there. One sentence of science, I promise that’s all.

There’s also the clubroot problem. A soilborne disease that absolutely hammers brassicas, and it thrives in acidic conditions. Keeping your pH up near neutral doesn’t guarantee you’ll dodge it, but it stacks the deck in your favor. Which, if you think about it, is pretty much the whole game with organic gardening anyway.

Testing Your Soil pH (Cheaply, Obviously)

You don’t need to send anything to a lab. A basic pH test kit from your local garden center runs a couple bucks and is accurate enough for this. You mix a small soil sample with distilled water, add the indicator solution, and match the color to the chart. That’s genuinely it.

Soil pH can vary more than you’d expect within a single raised bed, especially if you’ve been adding amendments unevenly over the years.

If your number comes back between 6.0 and 7.0, you’re probably fine. If it’s below 6.0, and in the Pacific Northwest it often is, you’ve got some adjusting to do.

Why You Do This in Fall, Not Spring

Here’s the thing about lime. It doesn’t work instantly. You can’t dump it on in March and expect it to fix anything by May when your transplants go in. Lime needs time to break down, react with the soil, and actually shift the pH. We’re talking months, not weeks.

Adjusting soil pH in fall for brassicas gives it all winter to do its thing. By the time you’re starting seeds indoors and dreaming of brassicas again, the soil is actually ready. This is one of those fall gardening moves that feels weirdly satisfying, like you’re doing something productive while everything else winds down. Future you will appreciate current you. How to Apply Lime Without Overdoing It

This is where I have to come clean about something. First time I did this, I figured if a little lime was good, more lime was better. Applied roughly twice the recommended amount and pushed my pH way over 7.0. Beets hate that just as much as they hate acidic soil. So I spent a whole season basically going backwards. Don’t be me.

The bag will have a rate chart based on your soil type and how far off your pH is. Follow it. For most garden soils needing a moderate adjustment, you’re often looking at something like 5 to 10 pounds of ground limestone per 100 square feet. Sandy soils need less. Clay soils can take more without swinging as hard. Check the bag, follow the chart, and then put the bag down.

Work it into the top few inches of soil rather than just leaving it on the surface. A rake is all you need. Water it in a bit. Then leave it alone and let chemistry do the rest.

Dolomitic lime is worth reaching for if you can find it at your local nursery or neighborhood hardware store. It adds magnesium alongside calcium, and brassicas genuinely appreciate both. Just another reason to plan ahead.

One More Thing Worth Knowing

If you’ve been adding lots of compost or wood chips over the years, your pH might actually be more stable than you’d expect. Organic matter buffers soil and resists swings in either direction. So don’t assume your beds are acidic just because everyone says PNW soil is. Test first, amend after. That’s really the whole strategy here.

Anyway. Test your soil, add some lime if it needs it, rake it in, and go do something else. The garden will handle the rest over winter while you ignore it guilt-free. That’s the kind of gardening I can get behind.
