When to pick sweet corn
I had to look up this answer myself since this is the first year I have grown sweet corn (Growing Challenge), here is the advice I found online: When the tassels turn dark brown When the juice from kernels are milky white and soft From GardenDesk, corn is ready when the raccoons eat it. From my personal experience, use tassel color to determine if you should even bother checking…

Growing in dirt outside
I haven’t done many posts in a while about regular old gardening in actual dirt so figured a good time to do an update. Though I enjoy indoor seed starting in my LED grow box and computerized grow box, some plants need to be started outdoors. Today my daughters and I planted the last these plants for fall outdoor planting. A few weeks ago, we planted garlic, onions, spinach,…
Picking wild blackberries (Blackberry pie recipe)
Given the price of produce these days and how blackberries cannot be killed here in the Pacific Northwest there are not too many trails that don’t have these bushes attempting to overtake them I decided to take my 4-year old with me blackberry picking. In just about 15 minutes (also length of time 4-year old has for blackberry picking) we were able to pick exactly 4 cups of blackberries….
Homemade waterproof digital thermometer
Now I am playing with hydroponics in my grow box I want to monitor the temperature of my nutrient tank. This is important too hot it can bread disease too cold it can shock your plants. I also want to use the data to identify how ebb/flow cycles affect ambient and solution temperature (for my own nerd curiosity) I have been thoroughly impressed with the Dallas DS18S20 temperature sensor…

Next I moved on to apples which I soaked in a solution of lemon juice (about 1/4 cup) with 1 cup of water. To…
Christmas light LED grow box – Update #1
I have been pretty impressed with the results of the Christmas lights LED grow box so far. I did have some preconceptions that I may need to double the lights or upgrade the LEDs, but so far the plants look healthy without white leggy stems, though still need to wait until the true leaves come in. As you can see in the picture above I have quite a selection…

A double rainbow! maybe you’ll find a pot of gold somewhere in your garden, just keep digging!
I was hoping that might mean there are two pots of gold at the end. But the science part of my brains keeps saying “That is caused due to the light refracting on the droplets of water vapor in the air”
That is a cool rainbow! And we get enough rain to see a lot of them! Thanks for the fave on blotanist!
