Growing Challenge: Planting the seeds
I have decided to participate in The Growing Challenge hosted by the people at Elements in Time. The short version is to try growing at least one thing from seed that you have not tried before. My daughters and I have decided to grow some tomatoes (Sweetie, San Marzano, Siletz) which I normally pick from the limited choice of seedlings that are available at my garden store. While picking…

How to save pea seeds from your garden
Most of the seeds I purchase, I am able to keep for at least a few seasons before running out. The one exception to this rule is peas, which I always have to buy each season. To save myself a couple dollars next year after I had my fill of peas from my garden I let quite a few mature which I will reuse for seeds this fall and…
How to grow onions and not onion flowers
Last year, I grew a lot of onion seeds but unfortunately not many large onions I could use in the kitchen. I have learned a few things since then which hopefully can help you not have the same problem. Use small onion sets: Last year I selected all of the largest onion sets in the 100 count bag which from some of my experimentation this year proves why almost…
Always have a Plan B in gardening
In college I had a business class, it definitely wasn’t the most memorable since all I remember it had something to do with working with small businesses. There was an important takeaway, which was always have a “Plan B”. The teacher used this term in particular when we were preparing to give presentations to the class, it was fine to use a PowerPoint presentation, though better have some overhead…
Attracting birds in your garden/yard
There are many benefits of having birds in your garden. The most obvious being the songs they sing in the morning and throughout the day. Now if you are not a morning person this may be a negative, but there are definitely more obtrusive ways to be woken up. Birds can directly help your garden by eating weed seeds they find throughout your lawn and garden. Like singing, this…
My Lettuce seeds have sprouted
My lettuce seeds sprouted faster than usual this year, I expected to have some problems since I have saved the seeds for 3 years now. I don’t have a heating pad (yeah I’m cheap) so just put them on top of the refrigerator in a makeshift greenhouse out of an old strawberry container. They would have still germinated in my mid-60 degree house, but the extra heat gained from…

I love your blog- it’s really great!I poked a few onions in our garden and now we have really awesome Horton Hears a Who big poofy flowers! How do you know when to harvest the seeds from the flowers?
Emily, I should have taken some pictures when I did harvest them. Basically I waited until they looked really ugly (dead and brown). Since itwas my first time I did pinch a few pods open to confirm there were some viable seeds. After that, I threw them in a paper bag and forgot about them for a few months (couple weeks should be long enough but I literally forgot about them) they should be dry enough to seperate.
